Obituary for Sidney Goodman

Sidney A. Goodman, born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on March 21, 1920, passed away at the age of 93, on October 20, 2013, at his home in California, with his loving family by his side. Sidney graduated from North High School where friends became lifelong buddies and business partners. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II and on June 15, 1942 married Georgine (Shanedling) in St. Louis, Missouri. They raised their family in Minneapolis. Returning from active duty, he began his business career by joining his father’s Goody Pop Bottling Company, became a distributor of Hamm’s Beer and started acquiring real estate properties. Sidney founded Sage Company in 1965, a premier development and management company. Sidney’s honesty, integrity and warmth cultivated many business relationships that became genuine friendships. Through his business dealings, Sidney was a mentor to countless people over the years, offering guidance based on knowledge that can only be gained through experience. Sidney was a surrogate father to many and was commonly known as “the King Fish”. While Sidney was a successful businessman, it was his sincere concern for every individual that made him an exceptional human being. He will be missed by many with his charisma, confidence, and acceptance of others; but it’s his joy of living that will remain with us forever. He was the proud recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 2004 for his lifelong support of humanitarian causes and philanthropic organizations, and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Jewish National Fund in 2010 for his support in the community and the State of Israel. Sidney is preceded in death by his parents, Harry & Esther; wife, Georgine; his sister, Harriet Nilva; his brother-in-law, Alvin Hork. A loving father and grandfather, Sidney is survived by his daughter, Holly Goodman (ex- husband, Merle Shapiro); son, John Goodman; grandsons, Brad Shapiro, Chad (Jennifer) Shapiro, and Shane (Carolin) Goodman; former granddaughter-in-law, Ami Shapiro; four great-grandchildren, (Keya, Jay, Jack, Gigi); his sister, Renee Hork; brother-in-law, Sam Nilva and nieces & nephews. The family would like to thank friends and caregivers for taking such excellent care of Sidney. Private family interment.
